Important Findings

At long last, the Tear Film and Ocular Surface Society Dry Eye Workshop II findings were announced at ARVO.

This was the 10-year update to the original workshop of 2007, which was based upon 4 levels of severity, and called the “Bible of Dry Eye” by the European Medicines Agency. The new report will be referred to as the “New Testament”.

There were 10 subcommittees comprised of 150 international experts. They have been working on this project since 2014. With original subcommittee report content, there were over 1000 pages written. The Sex, Hormones & Gender subcommittee originally had more than 1000 references!!! Imagine the magnitude…

The full report will be available online in June at

New definition announced for dry eye

The new definition of dry eye was announced May 7th, and is a follows:

“Dry eye is a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface characterized by a loss of homeostasis of the tear film, and accompanied by ocular symptoms, in which tear film instability and hyperosmolarity, ocular surface inflammation and damage, and neurosensory abnormalities play etiological roles,” stated Dr. Jennifer P. Craig, the Workshop Vice-Chair.

What do you think

Take a careful look? Agree? Disagree? Like it or not, the more awareness about this increasingly prevalent and undertreated disease state, the better. And if you are looking for a dry eye “protocol” for your practice this isn’t a bad place to start!

I will update this as more information is released.
