Imagine starting a long run in the early hours of the morning and continue running as the sun comes up. There is now a new category of contact lenses for this very instance. Johnson & Johnson Vision, Inc. has partnered with Transitions Optical to make its light-adaptive photochromic technology available in a contact lens – ACUVUE OASYS with Transitions Light Intelligent Technology.

This light adaptive technology is a revolutionary type of contact lens that provides vision correction along with a photochromic filter to continuously balance the amount of light entering the eye. These contact lenses adjust from clear to dark in response to changing sunlight conditions and reduce exposure to bright light both indoors and outdoors. They also filter blue light based on the level of activation and blocking UV rays. Keep in mind that these contact lenses are not a substitute for protective UV-absorbing eyewear such as sunglasses or UV-absorbing goggles since contact lenses do not completely cover the eyes.

510(k) clearance from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has been obtained for ACUVUE OASYS with Transitions for attenuation of bright light. This two-week replacement contact lens will be commercially available from Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc. in the first half of 2019.

These are exciting times for contact lenses!
