The Transitions Diversity Advisory Board (DAB) is valuable as it represents a cultural meeting of the minds. The DAB can help ensure all voices are heard and represented in the decision-making process. This can help create a more inclusive environment that values everyone. Personally, I wanted to join the Transitions DAB as I wanted to be part of an entity that is actively working towards change. Just in the last year, in working with Transitions, we have had the opportunity to visit multiple Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), to speak to the student body and campus leadership about optometry, which was a ton of fun! We are going to keep the momentum going—more HBCU visits and more conversations regarding optometry.

The Transitions HBCU Light Intelligent Tour, is continuing in 2023. Demonstrating the effectiveness of the tour in sparking diverse students’ interest in joining the field of optometry, Transitions and Black EyeCare Perspective are now expanding it to include virtual events in the Spring and Summer with plans to visit several HBCUs on-campus in the Fall.

A video recapping the 2022 HBCU Light Intelligent Tour at NCCU is available on Transitions’ Facebook account and

This tour is just one of the initiatives the Transitions Diversity Advisory Board has undertaken to recruit multicultural talent into the eyecare profession. Increasing diversity in the eyecare industry will ensure future optometrists can effectively advocate for multicultural patient needs and create a sustainable pipeline of multicultural talent.

Another action the DAB has taken is with the OneSight EssilorLuxottica Foundation. Transitions aspires to help provide access to quality vision care. Last year, along with Diversity Advisory Board, the brand was fortunate to see the impact of comprehensive eye exams in Orlando and wanted to extend that opportunity again. Community members in Orlando received free eye exams and glasses at a local vision clinic during the second annual community event connected with Transitions Academy.

There’s a lot of organizing and planning that goes on behind the scenes to ensure a successful event. Simply put the OneSight clinic prior to Transitions Academy was as rewarding as it was fun. Giving back to those in need serves as a reminder as to why I chose this wonderful profession.

Transitions Academy 2023 brought together over 1,100 industry experts from 50 countries around the world. The three-day, invitation-only event themed “Lights on Tomorrow” provided industry professionals with the opportunity to expand their knowledge and see the possibilities through expert presentations, inspiring guest speakers, and Transitions product and professional development workshops.

My first Transitions Academy did not disappoint—at all. Transitions Academy creates a totally immersive experience. It’s all about brand awareness—the energy, the vibe, the atmosphere is electric from start to finish. I have so many favorite moments, of course getting to connect and re-connect with colleagues and students and sitting front row to witness Arlene Segovia and Dr. Essence Johnson take the main stage to speak about the mission of the Transitions DAB.

Transitions provides its industry partners with the tools and education they need to better serve and improve communication with their culturally diverse patients. Resources are available free-of-charge to eyecare professionals at Those interested in being involved with the Transitions Diversity Advisory Board can submit an application there as well.
